Teams find Colin and Pete hanging out for them in an airplane hanger at Sydney Airport. Pete explains that they are about to embark upon the hardest challenge they have ever had in the history of My Kitchen Rules.
Teams will have ninety minutes to prepare and cook an inflight meal that must fit into the Jetstar meal black box. Passengers will mark their dishes out of ten, and the team with the highest score will win the challenge, the prize being having their dish served on selected Jetstar flights for three months.
The trickiest part of the challenge is that the dishes must conform to the very strict airline food regulations. Teams must cook their food, and leave enough time for it to cool down to four degrees in the blast chiller before plating it into the boxes.
Kat explains that she used to be an air hostess, so she thinks her and Andre will have an advantage in this challenge. This thought is short lived as her and Andre quickly lose altitude, and their dish comes crashing down. Kat and Andre are serving Peruvian Seared Tuna with Beans. They are the last to get their meat onto the hotplates, and the Inspector tells them their tuna will not be cooled in the time frame they have left. This causes Kat to have a major meltdown, and Andre is forced to fly solo on autopilot.
He has the genius idea to cut their tuna into slices so it cools down quicker. It works, and the tuna is cooled in time for serving. They run out of time in preparing their boxes and end up throwing in all the elements. On tasting, Pete and Colin say the tuna looks beautiful and is cooked well and especially well sealed. But that is where the compliments end. The bean salad is mushy and not mixed, and they can see the stress from their cook in the black box.
Ash and Camilla are making Manzo Tonnato with Asparagus – translation - Beef with Tuna Mayonnaise. Ash explains it is their take on a classic Italian dish. On tasting, the Judges think the beef is cooked well and the asparagus is beautiful, but the flavours are a bit muddled, with the tuna mayonnaise overpowering the entire dish. One of the passengers comment that it is a fancy restaurant in a box. Colin says he has tasted better dishes from the ladies.
Eva and Debra are cooking Chargrilled Prawns with Pineapple Salad and Cucumber and Apple Pickle. They are super organized in the kitchen and are the first to cook their protein. On serving, the Judges think the dish is fresh, vibrant and inviting. The prawns are cooked well, but are quite 'plane' without the sauce. The pineapple is overbearingly sweet because they used tinned pineapple, and it has put the whole dish out of balance. It is an ok dish, but it has not flown to hit the mark.
Emma and Jane are making Chicken Rice Paper Rolls with Nuoc Cham. They realize midflight that rolling eighty rice paper rolls is a Herculean task. On tasting, the Judges think they are tasty and the sauce makes the dish, but it is a bit ordinary, and the type of food one could get everyday at a food court. The passengers think the dish is inconsistent.
Will and Steve are creating Seared Miso Rainbow Trout with Crunchy Salad. The Judges think it is a perfect dish. It smells and looks good and fits the brief by elevating plane food. The salad has a good dressing and a beautiful flavor.
Drasko and Bianca are making Middle Eastern Lamb with Saffron Cauliflower. With his usual display of modesty, Drasko thinks the chef whites look good on him, and this challenge has the potential to be a massive head start for his career. They have the clever idea of using cauliflower as a substitute for cous cous.
On serving, the Judges think it is colourful and fragrant, the meal itself takes them on a journey. The salad is sensational, the lamb is wow. Pete says he would be stoked to get that meal flying anywhere around the world, and claims it as his dish of the day. Colin says that every detail of the dish is bang on, and Colin claims it as his dish of the day as well. The passengers agree with Pete and Colin, and score Drasko and Bianca’s dish with the highest score. They have won the opportunity to have their food served on selected Jetstar flights.
Colin and Pete choose Eva and Debra and Kat and Andre as the two worst dishes. They say their dishes did not have balance, and that is why they are in Sudden Death. Tune in for the next episode of My Kitchen Rules to see which WA team will find themselves flying home at the end of the evening.
